EXHIBITIONS

FOREST IN THE CITY

This is a textile installation worked on as a collaboration with Katy Doncaster and can be seen at DEDA in Derby.

It was commissioned as part of the Derby Well project for Derby Feste 2020, which would usually have be a weekend of live arts events across the city, but this year became an arts trail. It was based in the tradition of Derbyshire Well Dressing, with artist commissions and community projects.

We wanted to create a space in which people could come and contemplate a magical forest of trees, the silks gentle moving in the breeze of movement of  people in Deda's Cube cafe/bar. It's a reflection upon the fact that many of us looked to nature and green spaces during the long period of lockdown this year, and how nature has always provided us with solace, and places for meditation.

otso- king of the forest

This short film is another collaboration with my fellow artist, Katy Doncaster commissioned by The Woodland Trust for their Tree Charter Festival 2020.

The Woodland Trust created the Tree Charter three years ago, to encourage people to plant more trees, and enjoy being out in woods and forests. It was inspired by the 1217 Charter of the Forest, which gave more rights to poorer people to have access to the forests. The Tree Charter is rooted in more than 60,000 ‘tree stories’ gathered from people of all backgrounds across the UK and sets out the principles for a society in which people and trees can stand stronger together.

We have created an original story and film about Otso, the King of the Forest.

as part of a larger woodland lantern procession and community art project to encourage people to unite in celebrating, protecting, and enhancing the role and importance of trees and woods in our lives. Let us celebrate the power of trees!

The film can also be viewed on AirArts' virtual exhibition

Snail MAIL Art exchange

Triggered by a collaborative project facilitated by Cerebellum Arts, I was invited to take part in the first Snail Mail Art Exchange along with other home educating families - and we loved it!

Snail Mail 2 came about when an artist from the first project asked to do another, this time with other artists. So eleven artists from around the country decided to inspire each other to create new artwork.

The finished artwork can be seen at Derby Royal Hospital and on AirArts' virtual exhibition

GROWING LIGHT OF HOPE

Another collaboration with fellow artist Katy Doncaster has been selected to be a part of Air Arts latest exhibition UNITY - The Florence Nightingale Legacy.

An exhibition demonstrating Unity, in its many forms and the power of working together. Whilst celebrating the ‘Year of the Nurse and Midwife’ with particular emphasis on the recent bicentenary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

When considering how to incorporate the theme of Unity whilst celebrating the life of Florence Nightingale, we were drawn to two aspects of her work: hands and light.

Drawing on these two aspects as inspiration, we created a trail of photographed and framed hands carrying an orb of light. This orb lights up in each image one after another, to give the impression of movement and of the light being passed from one set of hands to another.

These hands are healthcare workers, parents, children, elderly - passing a symbol of hope from one person to the next which is amplified , growing with each step of its journey demonstrating the power of unity and working together.

The finished artwork is on display at Derby Royal Hospital.
